The mill boasts an inductive heating system that dumps fossil fuels, making it the nation's first rolling mill not to belch out direct carbon emissions - the so-called "Scope 1" emissions – during manufacturing. Impressive, isn't it?
And here's the twist: a gargantuan 300-meter long roller table connects the mill directly to the continuous casting plant. The continuous hot delivery system saves energy like a champ, chopping down emissions like there's no tomorrow.
Kretschmer: Two Steps Forward, One Step Green
Saxony's Minister President, Michael Kretschmer (CDU), raved about Feralpi's green moves, applauding their dedication to the industrial heart of Saxony. "Striking a balance between our economy and environment is the recipe for success," he highlighted.
Feralpi dropped a cool €220 million ($247 million)[2][3] in this site – the biggest single investment in their German history. The expansion is set to create around 100 fresh jobs, tickling the workforce count to around 950 employees.
A bag of modernizations doesn't stop there: a new scrap preparation facility, a spanking transformer station, and a logistics facelift rounded out the upgrades.
High Energy Costs: An Achilles' Heel for the Industry
Despite the groundbreaking improvements, Pasini voices concern over burgeoning energy prices in Germany, which could snuff out the industry's competitiveness. Additionally, he emphasizes the significance of treating scrap as a precious strategic raw material for a thriving circular economy.
Feralpi Stahl, one of Germany's top ten steel producers, churns out construction steel mostly from salvaged scrap in the Riesa plant.
