Yakutia's Reading Habits Shift: Audiobooks Surge, E-books Gain Middle-Income Fans
In the Republic of Yakutia, a surge in audiobook demand has outpaced e-books, while e-book popularity has soared, particularly among middle-income residents. Meanwhile, paper book sales have dipped.
Audiobooks have seen a 15% increase in demand, overtaking e-books in popularity. This shift comes as the average number of books read by a Yakutian resident has risen by 13%.
In the e-book market, the share has jumped by 66.5%. However, high-income readers, earning over 400,000 rubles a month, make up only about 2% of this market. Instead, middle-income Yakutians have emerged as the most active e-book buyers. The average online book purchase costs 345 rubles, significantly lower than the 615 rubles spent in stores.
By the end of August 2025, paper book sales in the republic had decreased by 8%. The most sought-after genres among Yakutian readers were fantasy, detective, and science fiction.
The shift in reading preferences in Yakutia is notable, with audiobooks leading the way and e-books gaining traction among middle-income readers. Despite a decline in paper book sales, the overall number of books read by residents has increased, indicating a thriving literary culture.
