"Worldwide wealth ranking places 'average' Germans at 28th position"

The UBS report reveals that the typical German citizen holds approximately 75,000 US dollars in wealth, placing them in the 28th spot globally. However, this average figure belies the skewed distribution of wealth amongst the population.

In the latest UBS Global Wealth Report, data obtained by the Berliner Zeitung reveals an interesting trend in Germany's wealth distribution. Despite a growing middle class and healthy median income, the median personal wealth per capita among this group remains lower than in some other countries.

The report shows that in 2024, the median personal wealth per capita for the middle class in Germany stood at approximately €69,500. This represents an increase from €60,940 at the end of 2023, but half of the population in Germany still had less wealth than this figure.

This uneven distribution of wealth can be attributed to several factors. For one, Germany lags behind in asset ownership and wealth structure compared to countries like the U.S., Australia, or Belgium. In these countries, widespread property ownership and robust pension systems contribute significantly to the median wealth. Germans, however, have lower rates of home ownership and a different pension structure, which impacts median net worth within the middle class.

Another factor is wealth distribution. Despite a broadly defined middle class and healthy median income (around €52,159 per year before taxes), Germany exhibits rising income inequality. As a result, the corresponding median wealth remains lower than might be expected from income alone.

Comparing median wealth per adult and average wealth per adult in Germany, it's clear that the gap between the two highlights wealth concentration and less broad-based wealth accumulation among the middle class. The median wealth per adult tends to be lower than the average because the wealthiest individuals own disproportionately more assets, skewing the average up.

Germany ranked 28th internationally in terms of median personal wealth per capita in 2024, a drop from its 2023 ranking. In terms of average wealth per adult, Germany ranked 19th, a drop from its 2023 ranking of 15th. This indicates a shift in wealth distribution within the country.

It's important to note that while the median wealth in Germany at the end of 2024 was higher than it was at the end of 2023, it still remained lower than the average wealth per adult in the country. Most Germans fell short of the 2023 average wealth per adult in Germany, which was €264,789. In 2024, this average decreased to approximately €237,500.

In conclusion, Germany's middle-class median personal wealth is lower than in some other countries due to less asset accumulation, pension system differences, and wealth inequality. This uneven wealth distribution reflects a gap between the median and average wealth per adult, suggesting a need for policies that promote broader wealth accumulation among the middle class.

  1. To address the issue of lower median personal wealth in Germany's middle class compared to some other countries, it might be beneficial to implement policies that encourage asset accumulation and adjust the pension structure.
  2. The uneven wealth distribution in Germany, as seen by the gap between the median and average wealth per adult, underscores the need for business and finance strategies focused on personal-finance education and equal wealth opportunities.
