Workers' Safeguard Proposal Demanded for Radiation Risks by Commission, Targeting Occupational Radiation Exposure Protection Directive

In the heart of Stuttgart, the State Theatre Stuttgart, under the leadership of Intendant Marc-Oliver Hendriks, has announced a re-evaluation of plans for the interim performance venue intended to serve as a temporary home for theatre, opera, and ballet for approximately the next decade.

The decision comes in response to increased construction costs in Germany and shifting financial circumstances, which have necessitated adjustments to the project's scope and design to remain within budget while maintaining artistic and operational standards.

The interim building, initially intended to be constructed between 2023 and 2027, has now been pushed back to a new schedule from 2028 to 2032. The focus remains on ensuring that the capacities of the interim building do not suffer significant reductions, and the structure remains compatible with the status quo after the comprehensive renovation of the actual opera house, which is planned for the 2040s.

Intendant Hendriks has expressed a desire to maintain the theatre's current audience structure during the interim period and has stated that they do not anticipate a decline in audience numbers. He also emphasized the importance of the interim building being able to support a broad range of operatic productions, with a focus on flexible, modular, or temporary structures that can accommodate the theatre's diverse programming needs.

Minister of Science Petra Olschowski (Greens) made the announcement after a meeting of the supervisory board of the Württemberg State Theatres. The reasons for the revision are mainly due to the increased construction costs in Germany and the dramatic changes in the financial situation of municipalities and the state.

The comprehensive renovation of the actual opera house is urgently needed, and the State Theatre Stuttgart is focusing on the outcome of the renovation in the 2040s. In the meantime, the theatre will continue to provide high-quality performances to its audiences while navigating the challenges of the interim period.

For more detailed information on the precise revised plans for the interim performance venue at Stuttgart Opera, it is recommended to consult official announcements or press releases directly from the Stuttgart State Theatre or the relevant Baden-Württemberg cultural authorities.

The re-evaluation of plans for the interim performance venue is a result of increased construction costs in Germany and shifting financial circumstances, which have led to adjustments in both the project's scope and design to align with the current industry, finance, and business climate. Intendant Hendriks remains focused on ensuring the interim building can accommodate a broad range of operatic productions, particularly flexible, modular, or temporary structures that cater to the diverse needs of the theatre's programming and audience.
