Hey there, road warriors! Buckle up, because if you're cruising along the A81 south of Stuttgart this weekend, you're gonna need some patience and maybe a good playlist. Due to some unavoidable construction, this significant north-south route will be fully blocked off from Friday evening (9th May) to Monday morning (12th May), according to our friends at Deges, the project management company who are supervising the works.

So, vroom-vroomers, between the junctions Sindelfingen-Ost and Böblingen-Hulb, you'll need to swap your highway-blazing ways for a detour via a twisty, route through the charming town of Sindelfingen. And, let's face it, that lovely town doesn't stand a chance against the hordes of us looking for an alternative. Expect traffic delays, congestion, and maybe a couple of laid-back coffee breaks along the way.

Now, if you've driven the A81 during their six-lane expansion in the past, you might remember those detours becoming a real crawler. But, Deges has a plan. Alongside the detour, they'll be opening the Böblingen-Ost junction in the southbound direction and installing a spiffy new temporary bridge over the highway. This bridge will be home to buses in the future, replacing an existing bridge that sadly got the wrecking ball in November.

By the way, the grand opening of this detour and bridge lifting will last from Friday, 10:00 PM, to Monday morning, 05:00 AM. Imagine, an entire weekend to make new memories and meander through Sindelfingen!

The A81 is undergoing a whopping widening from two to three lanes per direction, and they're also building noise barriers to keep the nearby residents from getting an earful of honking cars. The construction works started way back in 2021 and, honestly, they've been shutting the highway down left and right as they adapt a ton of crossing bridges to the new highway width. Fret not! They plan to have the whole shebang completed by 2027, and it'll set them back around 490 million euros.

The A81 is a vital north-south route, y'all. It kicks off at the Swiss border, connects the Lake Constance region with Stuttgart, and dashes off towards the Bavarian state border at Würzburg via Heilbronn. But, for this weekend, we're gonna have to find some alternative routes to make the most of our travels.

Alternative Routes

  1. B27 + B29: If you're heading north, zip down the B27 towards Stuttgart, then switch to the B29 to reach your destination. The flip side, if you're traveling south, make like a ninja and slip onto the B27 from the other direction before merging back onto the A81 beyond the closure.
  2. A8 + A6: Slide onto the A8 towards Stuttgart, then use the A6 or A81 to bypass the closure if you're going north. Southbound, reverse the route and merge back onto the A81.
  3. Local Routes: If you're a local, or fancy yourself a seasoned navigator, smaller roads like the L1189 or L1188 could be your ticket. They might just be the way to avoid the worst of the traffic jams, and you might even get to see some hidden gems of Sindelfingen!

GPS Navigation

Apps like Google Maps, Waze, or Sygic can help you stay on track with real-time traffic updates and suggest the best alternate routes according to current conditions.

Tips and Tricks

  • Stay Informed: Always keep tabs on the latest traffic news before hitting the road.
  • Plan Ahead: Allow some extra travel time to account for potential delays.

This guidance could help you steer clear of the chaos. Remember, conditions might vary, and it's best to check the most accurate and timely directions provided by updated GPS navigation systems. Safe travels, folks! 🚗🌮🌦️
