VW's Job Cuts & Severance Packages: A Closer Look

VW staff members opt for part-time sabbaticals in large numbers.

Volkswagen is ditching thousands of jobs by 2030 in a bid to stay competitive. With around 20,000 employees already on board for the job cuts, they're well on their way. About two-thirds of these exiting workers will be hanging up their keys and moving on to retirement. Remaining employees are either grabbing their severance packages or calling it quits early.

The Deets of the Exits

Volkswagen's severance payments vary like a sonofagun, but the range is downright scandalous - up to a whopping 400,000 euros! The exact amount depends on the employee's time with the automotive titan. The company is bullish on hitting their target of shedding 35,000 jobs in Germany by the end of the decade. They've got their sights set on the massive generations of '69 and '70, with over 32,000 roles potentially on the chopping block.

Savings Program & VW's Struggles

Right before the year ended, the company reached a consensus with employees on a comprehensive savings program for the core VW brand following a grueling wage dispute. Plant closures and job cuts had been looming, but for now, they've been kept at bay.

Gunnar Kilian, personnel director, stated, "We're making progress, and we're on track." With factory cost reductions in Wolfsburg underway and socially agreed job cuts at the six German sites of Volkswagen AG accelerating, the transformation is revving up.

The Road Ahead for VW

There's still a long road ahead for the savings plan. David Powels, the brand finance director, mentioned, "We've a ton of work ahead of us in the future." Their goal is to make Volkswagen competitive and sustainable by 2029.
