Volkswagen Proposes Sweeping Job Cuts and Plant Closures in Germany
Volkswagen has announced sweeping changes that could impact tens of thousands of jobs in Germany. The carmaker is demanding a ten percent wage cut and zero increases for the next two years. It has also terminated its employment guarantee, making redundancies possible from mid-2025.
The company plans to close several plants and cut jobs, with no German site considered safe. According to Daniela Cavallo, head of the works council, at least three plants are at risk of closure, including Osnabrück, which faces uncertainty due to a lost Porsche order. All remaining sites are expected to shrink. The works council has revealed that the company is considering moving some operations abroad.
Volkswagen and the IG Metall union will meet on Wednesday for the second round of negotiations on the company agreement. The company employs around 120,000 people in Germany, with half based in Wolfsburg, operating a total of ten plants in the country.
The proposed changes at Volkswagen could significantly reshape the company's German operations. The impact on jobs and communities is substantial, with negotiations ongoing between the company and the union.
