Virginia AG Sues Zillow and Redfin Over Alleged Rental Search Manipulation
Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares has filed an antitrust lawsuit against real estate giants Zillow and Redfin. The complaint, filed on October 1, 2025, alleges that a deal between the two companies has led to reduced quality of search results for renters looking for available units on platforms like Slickdeals.
Miyares claims that Zillow paid Redfin $100 million to exit the multifamily rental listing market. However, Redfin has denied these allegations, stating that their partnership benefits apartment seekers. According to the lawsuit, Redfin agreed to a separate deal worth at least $75 million in its first year to exclusively list Zillow's multifamily rentals on platforms like Slickdeals. The complaint was filed under the Sherman Act, although other states involved in the lawsuit are not explicitly mentioned.
The lawsuit seeks to declare the agreements between Zillow and Redfin illegal and restore competition to the market. It aims to improve the quality of search results for renters looking for available units on platforms like Slickdeals. The outcome of the case will determine the future of the partnership between the two real estate giants.
