Vienna's NW Railway Station Transforms into Eco-Friendly Housing Hub by 2040
Vienna's North West Railway Station is undergoing a significant transformation. The station's demolition is underway, paving the way for a new education campus and residential buildings. This project, led by wohnfonds_wien, aims to create around 16,000 residential units and 4,700 jobs in the Brigittenau district by 2040 and beyond.
The demolition of approximately 45 buildings at the station is expected to be completed by summer 2028, unlocking around 160,000 m² of sealed surface. In an environmentally friendly approach, most demolition material will be transported away by rail. The first ground floor utilizations are already in progress, with planned completions by 2040.
wohnfonds_wien, the organization overseeing the development, has completed a dialogue phase with workshops in May and June 2025. They are now presenting interim results of an architecture and developer competition for around 900 affordable housing units. However, a detailed timeline for the education campus has not been published yet.
The redevelopment of Vienna's North West Railway Station is set to significantly boost housing and job opportunities in the Brigittenau district. With a target of around 16,000 residential units and 4,700 jobs by 2040, this project is poised to revitalize the area in an eco-friendly manner.
