In December 2024, there could be an accumulation of deliveries at almost all DHL logistics centers, as a result of a forecasted labor action that has been announced.

Environmental Protest Leads to Unsuccessful Interception of Every Fourth Package Currently - verified-warning work stoppage - approximately every fourth delivery is held temporarily

DHL workers, represented by the union Verdi, have taken strike action over disagreements regarding wage increases and additional vacation days. This has resulted in delays for those expecting packages or letters, particularly at Deutsche Post, where one in ten letters and a quarter of packages are currently being held up. The backlog, according to a Post spokesperson, will be cleared promptly.

Verdi is demanding a 7% wage increase over a 12-month contract for around 170,000 letter carriers, package deliverers, and other logistics employees. DHL, which owns Post, has proposed an initial 1.8% increase over 27 months, followed by a further 2%.

The union is also pushing for three extra vacation days, while Post members would receive four. However, the Post is only offering one extra vacation day to employees with less than 30 vacation days a year.

Talks continued on Monday, with negotiations remaining unresolved. Verdi has continued to call for warning strikes, leading to disruptions in some areas. Despite these challenges, DHL argues that higher wage demands are financially unsustainable due to declining letter volumes and significant investment needs.

The last few weeks have seen Verdi call for warning strikes in various areas, affecting parcel and letter centers and resulting in temporary delays. Despite efforts to mitigate the impact, operational adjustments are in place to manage the disruptions.

The economic context in Germany, including inflation and high living costs, plays a significant role in Verdi's demands for better compensation. The situation remains uncertain, with further talks planned to address these issues.

  1. DHL's workforce, represented by the trade union Verdi, is demanding a 7% wage increase from DHL, citing the economic context in Germany with high living costs and inflation.
  2. The ongoing strike action by Verdi members at DHL, including DHL-owned Post, has resulted in a significant backlog of packages and letters, impacting delivery times for customers.
  3. Despite DHL's argument that higher wage demands are financially unsustainable due to declining letter volumes and significant investment needs, DHL employees, backed by Verdi, have continued their push for improved working conditions, including additional vacation days.
