Some say it's a revolution, others call it a privacy invasion. Regardless, the crypto project Worldcoin is pushing ahead with its ambitious expansion plan. The U.S. is now home to Worldcoin's biometric identity verification system, with eye scanners set up in six major cities: Atlanta, Nashville, Miami, Los Angeles, Austin, and San Francisco.

In a recent blog post, Worldcoin explained Americans can utilize these eye scanners to create unique digital IDs and receive WLD tokens—the native currency of the Worldcoin ecosystem. In addition to WLD tokens, users also receive a World ID, a digital identifier that can be used for authentication on platforms like Minecraft, Reddit, and Telegram.

The expansion comes after scrutiny in various countries, including Spain and Portugal, where Worldcoin operations have been temporarily halted due to concerns about biometric data collection and security. Last year, authorities in Spain ordered the project to cease data gathering following numerous customer complaints about the invasive nature of the data-gathering process.

Despite the regulatory challenges, Worldcoin has managed to secure several partnerships, including a Visa-backed debit card for WLD spending, a trial with Match Group to test identity verification on dating apps, and, most recently, a listing on Coinbase's roadmap.

The launch of WLD tokens in the U.S. saw a brief surge in the cryptocurrency's price but later dropped, trading at around $1.08—a significant decrease from its peak in March 2024. Still, WLD prices have increased by 20% in the last week.
