Unhindered travel at Leuzeknoten, yet persisting traffic congestion persists
In the heart of Stuttgart, the city's largest road construction project is underway, with a completion date set for spring 2026. The construction site at the Neckar-Käpt'n landing stage opposite the Wilhelma will be cleared by the end of this year, transforming the area into a spacious green expanse by spring 2026.
The road project, overseen by the Tiefbauamt of the City of Stuttgart (Landeshauptstadt Stuttgart), involves new road connections at the Leuzeknoten. These connections, opened a few hours ago on Friday morning, are already having an impact on traffic flow.
The Leuzeknoten, one of the most important traffic hubs in the state capital, sees around 120,000 vehicles daily. The ongoing construction work has caused a bottleneck on the B10/B14 from Esslingen and in the short tunnel towards the city center. This has resulted in significant traffic congestion, with vehicles backed up for several kilometers in the Rosenstein Tunnel to the Pragsattel in the direction of Esslingen.
However, relief is on the horizon. By the end of the construction project, there will be two lanes on the B10/B14 from Esslingen towards the city center, and three lanes in the opposite direction from the Rosenstein Tunnel towards Neckarpark and Esslingen. This significant increase in capacity is expected to alleviate the current traffic congestion.
The new exit ramp from the König-Karls Bridge to the Rosenstein Tunnel is scheduled to go into operation by mid-next week, further improving traffic flow. Engineer Fabian Schmidt stated that many drivers are hesitantly switching to the third lane of the B10 coming from the Rosenstein Tunnel towards Esslingen.
The Integrated Traffic Control Center (IVLZ) reported a significant impact on traffic due to the road construction project. However, traffic will not be affected by the redesign as there will always be two lanes available in both directions.
Long traffic jams have formed in the morning rush hour due to the road construction project, particularly in the direction of Esslingen. The new road connections at the Leuzeknoten are causing some drivers to use the detour via the Mercedes and Benzstraße.
Despite the current challenges, the project is progressing. The previously used ramp will be converted into the future on-ramp in the opposite direction to Bad Cannstatt by Christmas. The two engineers expect the construction site on the former turnaround between Leuzeknoten and Wilhelma to be dismantled by Christmas, allowing the remaining lanes to be opened.
The largest road construction project in Stuttgart, with a budget of nearly 500 million euros, is scheduled to be completed in spring 2026. The redesign of the intersection of the B10 with the Poststraße, including the turn-off to the Leuze parking lot, will take just as long.
In contrast, in the opposite direction on the B10 towards the city center, there was only a relatively short backup to the Gaisburger Bridge. The traffic light system on the König-Karls Bridge is not yet synchronized with the signals in the tunnels, causing a bottleneck with only one lane available in the direction of the city center and Esslingen.
Despite these challenges, the project is expected to reach its full capacity by the end of the construction project in spring 2026, bringing much-needed relief to Stuttgart's traffic congestion.
