Immigration White Paper by Labour Reveals Measures to Encourage Companies to Employ More British Workers

Train UK Workforce to Reduce Immigration Dependence

Under proposed immigration policies, companies will be required to educate and skill British workers.

The British government is planning to bolster local workforce training as companies seek to hire foreign workers, aiming to lessen the economy's reliance on mass immigration.

Recent surveys reveal that firms are hesitant about investing in UK workforce training, given the economic uncertainty ahead. Nevertheless, the Labour government is rumored to introduce measures in an upcoming immigration white paper that will encourage companies to prioritize local hiring.

Specific sectors like engineering and IT may receive targeted workforce strategies, and employers will be barred from hiring overseas workers if they fail to provide training to domestic staff.

The Department for Business and Trade and the Treasury are set to unveil the government's industrial strategy soon, which will most likely encompass labor and job opportunities. The white paper will also reportedly tighten requirements for worker visas, setting a higher standard for English language proficiency.

With net migration levels reaching 728,000 in the year ending June 2021, the government has been making strides in reducing this figure through immigration reforms. Previous Tory government reforms focused on altering visa rules and increasing the minimum salary threshold for a skilled worker visa. These changes have already seen a drop in applications, as per Oxford University's Migration Observatory.

Streamlined and Controlled Immigration

Home secretary Yvette Cooper is focusing on immigration policy reforms that won’t raise net migration levels. Potential plans for a youth mobility scheme with the European Union are currently under discussion. Yvette Cooper has pledged that this scheme will be "smart and controlled."

Meanwhile, addressing illegal migration and reducing small boat crossings will also be a strategic priority for the government. The cost of accommodating asylum seekers is projected to reach £15.3bn by 2029, putting pressure on public finances and risking public backlash.

Providers who have signed government contracts to house asylum seekers, such as Serco and Mears Group, could reap significant profits by the end of the decade due to limited control options for the Home Office.

Boosting London's Talent Attraction

Implementing a youth mobility scheme with the European Union could help enhance London's reputation as a magnet for talent and high-skill jobs. Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) chief executive Neil Carberry said such a scheme would "embed major companies based in London, underpinning the UK position as a financial services and professional services leader with the second biggest exposure of professional services in the world."

UK workforce training initiatives aim to create a more skilled domestic labor force, thereby reducing reliance on immigrant labor over time. By prioritizing training and apprenticeships, the government seeks to strike a balance between economic growth and immigration control. However, this strategy may create temporary labor shortages in immigrant-reliant industries, leading to increased labor costs and challenging operational conditions.

  1. The Labour government is planning to introduce measures, such as encouraging local hiring, in an upcoming immigration white paper to lessen the nation's dependency on mass immigration and its impact on the economy.
  2. The trends in finance, business, and general-news highlight the necessity for the government to improve the outlook for local workforce training, as firms are uncertain about investing due to economic factors.
  3. The Department for Business and Trade and the Treasury, in collaboration, are expected to bring out the government's industrial strategy, which will likely encompass labor and job opportunities, in the near future.
  4. The government's immigration policy reforms, like raising the English language proficiency standard for worker visas, aim to bring a controlled and streamlined approach to immigration.
  5. Providers who have government contracts to house asylum seekers could witness substantial profits by 2029, given the limited control options for the Home Office.
  6. Implementing a youth mobility scheme with the European Union could bring agreement on increasing London's attraction as a talent magnet and high-skill job destination, while ensuring a skilled domestic labor force in the long run.
