The Mainz-South motorway junction, a crucial intersection in the Rhine-Main region, has been the source of daily traffic jams, closures, and detours for commuters since at least 2017. The ongoing construction work, which has cost approximately 43 million euros, aims to replace two old bridges at the site.

The construction project, prioritized by Autobahn GmbH, has faced unexpected delays due to issues at the construction site. However, progress is being made, and the Mainz-South motorway junction is expected to be completed by early October, provided the weather cooperates.

The A60, which converges with the A63 at this junction, is also expected to reopen by early October. Currently, the A60 is closed at the motorway junction until Monday morning. The A63, on the other hand, will be partially closed from Friday, September 19, at 8 PM, and is expected to reopen on Monday at 5 AM. The A63 section will be completed after its reopening on Monday.

Further demolition work and lane marking are still needed on the A60, and there is no specific timeline for their completion. The bridge towards Bingen at the Mainz-South motorway junction was not affected by the issues that caused delays in construction work.

However, the construction work at the bridge towards Frankfurt was re-tendered, causing delays and additional costs. In autumn 2021, the contract for this bridge was terminated due to cracks in the concrete structure. The contractor responsible for these preliminary works is not explicitly named in the search results.

The long-term construction site at the Mainz South junction has been a source of frustration for many, even inspiring comedian Lars Reichow to joke about it during the "Mainz remains Mainz" Fastnachtssitzung in early 2022. With the completion of the Mainz-South motorway junction in sight, commuters can look forward to smoother journeys in the Rhine-Main region.

Approximately 100,000 vehicles use the A60 daily, and about 80,000 use the A63. The completion of the construction work at the Mainz-South motorway junction will undoubtedly bring relief to these thousands of commuters.
