Last year, Costco's shareholders overwhelmingly rejected a proposal to review the company's DEI strategies, voting against it with a staggering 98% majority. Such outcomes have been relatively uncommon, as shareholder resolutions opposing DEI programs usually secure less than 2% support on average in U.S. corporations.

This consistent investor reluctance to undermine DEI initiatives despite shifting political climates is underscored by recent events. For instance, the former U.S. President issued an executive order, directing federal agencies to dismantle DEI policies, which may have further influenced corporate attitudes.

The group behind Costco's proposal, the National Center for Public Policy Research, critics of DEI, alleged that such initiatives could pose legal, reputational, and financial risks, potentially impacting shareholder returns. Nonetheless, they were silent on the shareholder vote's outcome.

Quite a few corporations, such as Meta, Amazon, JPMorgan Chase, and Boeing, have amended their DEI initiatives, adapted their goals, or withdrawn from working with the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s corporate equity index. Notably, while many companies respond to external pressures, corporations like JPMorgan Chase, led by CEO Jamie Dimon, remain steadfast in their support for DEI initiatives.

Moreover, Americans appear divided on the topic of DEI programs at work, with 52% viewing them positively, 21% expressing negativity, and 26% holding neither sentiment. Nevertheless, this landscape is continuously evolving, reflecting the nuanced perception of DEI in the corporate world.

The membership-only retailer, Costco, boasting over 300,000 employees globally and approximately 219,000 in the United States, tends to stand at the forefront of such societal discussions.

The National Center for Public Policy Research, criticizing DEI initiatives, claimed they could pose legal, reputational, and financial risks for companies.
