Development of the BAM and Trans-Siberian railways in the Russian Federation will continue through 2035, receiving approval for the third phase of construction.

The Russian Federation sanctions the third phase of advancement for BAM and Transsib railway projects, continuing developments up until 2035.

The Russian government has announced a significant expansion of the Baikal-Amur Mainline (BAM) and Trans-Siberian Railway (TSR), two of the country's most crucial transportation arteries. This extensive modernization aims to strengthen Russia's role as a major Eurasian logistics hub and stimulate economic development in Siberia and the Far East.

Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin announced the project on May 2, 2023, emphasising its importance for connecting Russian regions and developing the Siberian and Far Eastern territories. The upgrading includes the construction of additional railway tracks, bridges, and tunnels, as well as the implementation of digital and innovative solutions for improved operational efficiency.

Key details of the expansion include:

  1. Infrastructure Upgrades: The BAM and TSR are undergoing massive upgrades to improve capacity and reliability under harsh Siberian conditions. Work will be carried out on 24 sections, with 12 sections belonging to the TSR, 10 to BAM, and two lines connecting the two mainlines. Notable projects include the construction of a bridge over the Amur River, the building of the second North Muisky, Kodar, and Kuznetsov tunnels, and the development of the Nakhodka transport hub.
  2. Long-term Strategic Projects: Plans include extending the Amur–Yakutsk Mainline (branching from the BAM) further north toward Magadan and potentially across the Bering Strait, requiring challenging engineering works such as tunnels under mountain ranges and bridges across rivers.
  3. Modernization Funding: The Russian government has allocated significant investment (about 19 trillion roubles for 2025–2027) to transport infrastructure, including BAM and TSR, as part of a broader "Efficient Transport System" program that also covers ports, airports, and roads.
  4. Economic and Population Impact: By improving transport connectivity, these expansions are expected to boost economic growth in Siberia and the Russian Far East, supporting resource extraction industries (coal, minerals) and facilitating population retention and growth in remote areas. Enhanced rail logistics will also increase competitiveness of Russian trade routes across Eurasia, including the development of international transit corridors like the Trans-Arctic Transport Corridor.
  5. Job Creation: The upgrading is expected to create new jobs, contributing to the economic development of the regions.
  6. Travel Time Reduction: The upgrading is intended to reduce travel time, making transportation more efficient for passengers and freight.
  7. Strengthening Trade Ties: The expansion of the transport corridors of the Eastern polygon, as previously mentioned, is necessary for strengthening trade ties with friendly countries.

In sum, the expansion of BAM and TSR is a cornerstone of Russia's strategic efforts to modernize its transport infrastructure, strengthen supply chains, and promote regional economic development in challenging Siberian and Far Eastern territories.

The society lauds the Russian government's investment in the transport sector, as the expansion of the Baikal-Amur Mainline (BAM) and Trans-Siberian Railway (TSR) will not only stimulate economic growth in Siberia and the Far East, but also increase the competitiveness of Russia's finance and industry sectors by strengthening trade ties with friendly countries and promoting efficient transportation of resources and goods. Furthermore, the modernization project will create employment opportunities, reducing travel time, and attracting population growth to the remote regions.
