Tesla Wins 228 MW Chile Solar Project, Boosting Grid Stability

AES Gener, operating as AES Andes, has commissioned Tesla to supply Megapacks for a 228 MW solar project in Tarapacá, Chile. The project, named Cielos de Tarapacá, combines solar energy with a battery storage solution to enhance grid stability.

The Cielos de Tarapacá project, initiated around 2021, has a capacity of 253 MW solar and 120 MW storage. AES, both a power generator and storage provider in Latin America, operates the project with its joint venture partner. Each Megapack stores over 3.9 MWh, enough to power around 3,600 homes for an hour. Some of these Megapacks are also destined for two Australian projects worth $200 million. Tesla celebrated the production of its 10,000th Megapack in November at the Lathrop factory.

The project in Chile will tie to a 912 MWh/day battery energy storage installation. Upon completion in mid-2026, it will supply clean energy to over 55,000 homes. Neoen has begun operating the country's largest battery installation powered by Tesla's Megapacks. The solar facility is backed by a $260 million investment and will generate 200 jobs at its peak.

Tesla has been awarded a contract to supply Megapacks for the 228 MW Cielos de Tarapacá project in Chile. The project, a collaboration between AES Gener and AES Andes, will enhance grid stability and provide clean energy to thousands of homes upon completion.
