In a move that may impact long-term Tesla owners, the automaker has made changes to its free lifetime Supercharging promotion. The exact timing of the promotion's end is unclear, but as of May 26, 2020, the offer no longer applies to custom-ordered vehicles.

For those who bought Model S and Model X vehicles before January 15, 2017, the free Supercharging for life was included as a standard feature. Between August 2, 2019, and May 26, 2020, Tesla also offered the promotion for these models. However, for vehicles ordered between January 15, 2017, and November 2, 2018, owners received 400 kWh (approximately 1,000 miles) of free Supercharging credits per year.

Current offers provide limited-time free Supercharging, such as 3 months or 18 months, tied to special offers or inventory sales. The free lifetime Supercharging offer is no longer available on custom orders.

The promotion is still available on inventory Model S and Model X vehicles in the United States, Canada, Europe, the Middle East, and Puerto Rico. Notably, buyers in the United Kingdom can receive free lifetime Premium Connectivity with the purchase of an inventory Model S or Model X.

The reintroduction of the lifetime Supercharging incentive followed a price increase for the Model S and X in Canada and the U.S. The incentive was designed to soften the blow of the price hike and add extra value for potential buyers.

Tesla has not specified if the promotion no longer applies to new orders or if there has been a change of heart and the offer has been extended further. The current version of the lifetime Supercharging incentive applies only to the original purchaser and cannot be passed on if the vehicle is sold.

For drivers who primarily charge at home, the perk may not offset the premium price of the flagship models, especially with the loss of transferability. As always, it's essential to consider all factors when making a purchase decision. Stay tuned for updates on the status of the free lifetime Supercharging promotion.

  1. The ending of Tesla's free lifetime Supercharging promotion for custom-ordered vehicles might influence long-term owners of electric vehicles in the automotive industry.
  2. The finance industry is affected by the recent change in Tesla's policy, as potential buyers might reconsider their purchase decisions due to the loss of the free lifetime Supercharging offer.
  3. The technology sector, particularly transportation and lifestyle, could see changes as Tesla offers free Supercharging credits for a limited time on inventory cars, encouraging more electric vehicle adoption.
  4. As Tesla adjusts its offers, it becomes vital for consumers to consider factors like cost, benefits, and incentives before purchasing electric cars, such as the Model S and X, in light of the changing promotions in the automotive industry.
