Tesla Launches Robotaxi Service in Austin, Texas

Tesla has launched its robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, marking a significant stride in the company's autonomous vehicle development. The service, operating daily from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m., uses driverless 2025 Model Y SUVs equipped with an 'unsupervised' iteration of Tesla's Full Self-Driving software.

The robotaxi service, priced at a fixed rate of $4.20 per ride, currently operates within a restricted zone in South Austin. Initially, a fleet of around 10 vehicles is in use. Tesla has expanded its robotaxi tests to other states like Arizona and the Bay Area in California, although the Tesla stock service is not yet fully commercial in these areas.

Tesla's robotaxi service relies on cameras and end-to-end AI, with an in-cabin camera that remains inactive by default during rides but may be used in specific situations. A Tesla employee acts as a 'safety monitor' in the front passenger seat. The company encourages early access riders to capture photographs and videos of their experiences but reserves the right to suspend or terminate Robotaxi access for rule violations.

Tesla has restricted information dissemination about the robotaxi service, blocking public records requests and preventing the city of Austin from fulfilling a records request.

The launch of Tesla's robotaxi service in Austin is a notable milestone in the company's autonomous vehicle development. The service's expansion to other states and the use of advanced technology highlight Tesla's commitment to pushing the boundaries of self-driving cars. However, the company's secrecy regarding service details raises questions about transparency and public engagement.
