Switched My GMC Sierra Denali 6.2L for a 2025 Chevy Colorado, Contrary to Expectations, I'm Not Pining for That V8 Engine at All
Chevy Colorado's 2.7L TurboMax Engine: A Mixed Bag for Owners
Mark Van Norman, a recent purchaser of the Chevy Colorado Z71, has been impressed with the performance and fuel economy of the vehicle's 2.7L TurboMax engine. He found the engine to be a "beast," delivering ample performance while achieving an impressive 22.9 mpg average.
The 2.7L TurboMax engine in the Chevy Colorado produces 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque, making it a formidable powertrain for the midsize pickup. However, some users have reported a delay in peak engine power delivery, known as turbocharger lag. This issue, which can sometimes be addressed with software updates, has been a source of frustration for some owners.
One feature that has proven to be particularly useful for Mark is the mid-position tailgate, which can support up to 500 lbs (226 kg). This has allowed him to carry 8-foot panels on his Chevy Colorado without them sliding out the back, solving a concern he had about the midsize pickup's ability to handle his hauling needs.
The Chevy Colorado's mid-position tailgate also helps prevent items from sliding out of the truck bed when partially open, providing added convenience for everyday use.
Common problems reported with the Chevy Colorado's 2.7L TurboMax engine include carbon buildup due to its direct injection system, which can negatively affect performance. Other issues include valvetrain or lifter failures, especially related to rocker arms and hydraulic lash adjusters, and other component issues like transfer case or fuel pump problems. Some owners have reported challenges with dealership service addressing these issues.
To maximize the engine's reliability and longevity, owners are advised to strictly follow Chevrolet’s recommended maintenance schedule, including regular oil and filter changes. Using premium fuel is suggested to help reduce carbon buildup. Owners should also monitor engine performance closely and promptly address any unusual noises or problems. Considering an extended warranty is advisable for peace of mind with this newer engine design.
The 2023 and 2024 Colorado models offer additional features such as a StowFlex Tailgate, an integrated measurement tool, and two cupholders integrated into the tailgate. Despite some challenges, the 2.7L TurboMax engine offers good torque and performance potential for the average truck owner, though it may not be ideal for heavy-duty towing.
