Swiss Teen Caught Smuggling €14,000 in Gold Jewelry at Friedrichshafen Airport
Customs officers at Friedrichshafen Airport recently intercepted an 18-year-old Swiss woman attempting to smuggle untaxed gold jewelry worth 14,000 euros through the green channel. The woman, identified as Erdal A., claimed the jewelry was a family heirloom from her grandmother.
Upon discovery, a criminal proceeding was initiated against the woman. She was fined import duties totaling 3,000 euros on the spot, with a small bail of 600 euros set. The expected fine amount is still pending. The gold jewelry was seized and is now in the custody of customs officials.
The woman attempted to evade taxes by carrying the jewelry in her possession, rather than declaring it and paying the appropriate duties. Customs officers are trained to detect such attempts and ensure that all goods entering the country are properly declared and taxed.
The incident serves as a reminder that attempting to smuggle goods, especially high-value items like gold jewelry, is a serious offense. The woman's claim of inheritance did not exempt her from paying import duties. The case is ongoing, with the final fine amount yet to be determined.
