Survey of export cable routes for new Dutch offshore wind farms commissioned to NextGeo under Prysmian contract
In a significant move towards the development of renewable energy in the Netherlands, NextGeosolutions has secured two contracts worth a combined total of approximately €63 million. These contracts, awarded by Prysmian and TenneT, involve crucial survey services for the IJmuiden Ver Alpha and Nederwiek 1 offshore wind farm projects.
Under the first contract, NextGeosolutions will be responsible for conducting marine survey services, specifically geophysical and unexploded ordnance (UXO) surveys, in offshore and nearshore Dutch waters along the planned export cable routes. This work is scheduled to take place between 2026 and 2027 and aims to collect crucial data to support the final design stage of the cable installation for these wind farms.
The farm tender for the first phase of the Nederwiek 1-A area is expected to be launched in October this year, and TenneT signed a grid realisation agreement with the Noordzeker consortium at the beginning of this year for the development of the 2 GW IJmuiden Ver Alpha farm. Work under this contract is also scheduled to take place between 2026 and 2027.
Prysmian, responsible for delivering 525 kV XLPE HVDC cable connections for the IJmuiden Ver Alpha and Nederwiek 1 sites, whose onshore landing point is at Sloegebied in Zeeland, has been contracted by TenneT since 2023 for the export cable work at these sites.
NextGeosolutions has already worked in the Nederwiek area under a contract with TenneT in 2024, and has been conducting UXO survey activities in the Nederwiek area since January. These activities include both offshore and nearshore works in the Doordewind zone.
The second contract awarded to NextGeo is for the Bay of Biscay interconnection project, an HVDC cable system linking coastal areas of Spain and France. This project, valued at approximately €43 million, involves extensive geophysical and geotechnical activities in the 4 GW Doordewind zone.
These contracts support the Netherlands' Offshore Wind Roadmap 2030 focused on developing an efficient subsea power grid to transport renewable energy from offshore wind farms to the mainland power system. By conducting detailed seabed investigations and safety assessments related to cable route preparation and design, NextGeosolutions plays a crucial role in the successful installation of export cables connecting the offshore wind farms to the national grid.
- The finance industry will be investing approximately €63 million in NextGeosolutions, as the company has secured two contracts for crucial survey services in the renewable-energy market, specifically for the IJmuiden Ver Alpha and Nederwiek 1 offshore wind farm projects in the Netherlands.
- In the near future, NextGeosolutions will be providing geophysical and UXO surveys for the Dutch market, working on the Bay of Biscay interconnection project that links coastal areas of Spain and France, a project worth approximately €43 million in the renewable-energy industry.
- Not only is NextGeosolutions actively involved in the development of offshore wind farms in the Netherlands, but they are also contributing to the creation of an efficient subsea power grid for renewable energy transport from offshore wind farms to the mainland power system, as outlined in the Netherlands' Offshore Wind Roadmap 2030.
