Struggling DC eatery starts crowdfunding campaign to keep its doors open amid decline in business
In the heart of Washington D.C., two establishments, 'As You Are' and Belga Cafe, are facing tough times.
'As You Are', a bar catering to a sapphic and trans customer base, has been a beacon of inclusivity since its opening. The owners are committed to keeping prices affordable to stay true to their purpose, but the current economic climate is proving challenging.
August is traditionally a slow month for many D.C. restaurants, but 'As You Are' has seen a more severe drop-off in business that hasn't bounced back in September. The owners attribute this decline to the National Guard's presence and people staying home due to the presence of various federal agencies.
Similarly, Belga Cafe, a fixture on 8th Street for over 20 years, has observed a decline in private events, less dining, and less spending. Rinata Gafarova, the General Manager, notes a significant decrease in foot traffic on the street since August and a decrease in tourists.
The National Guard's presence in certain D.C. areas has contributed to a drop-off in foot traffic for some restaurants, including 'As You Are', where a 50 to 60% decrease in business has been reported.
Inflation and the amendment to Initiative 82, which phases out the tipped minimum wage earlier this summer, are also affecting the cost of food and supplies for D.C. restaurants. However, no specific companies in Washington, D.C. during August 2021 were identified as experiencing revenue changes linked directly to these factors, nor are there specific measures to remain open detailed.
'As You Are' has launched a GoFundMe as a major effort to keep their doors open due to the financial struggles caused by the drop in business. The owners are fighting for their lives to keep their bar open to the community they serve.
Belga Cafe, which used to serve about 4-500 people on weekends, now starts with about 100-150. Rinata Gafarova attributes the decline in D.C. dining traffic to the return of people to work and a decrease in tourists.
Despite the challenges, both 'As You Are' and Belga Cafe remain resilient, continuing to serve their communities in these difficult times.
