Tesla, the electric vehicle (EV) giant, has announced plans to launch more affordable versions of its popular Model Y and Model 3. The company aims to achieve this by simplifying the vehicles and reducing production costs, targeting a 20% cost reduction.

According to Tesla's VP of vehicle engineering, Lars Moravy, and Chief Financial Officer, Vaibhav Taneja, the affordable electric cars will be built on Tesla's current production lines and will resemble the existing models in form and shape. The upcoming budget Model Y, codenamed E41, is already in early production, with volume manufacturing expected to ramp up in the second half of 2025 and a launch anticipated in Q4 2025.

To lower costs, Tesla is considering stripping back the Model 3 and Model Y. This includes paring down the main touchscreen in size, offering basic paint colors for the exterior, and removing features such as heated/cooled seats, premium audio, and acoustic glass. The company is also considering using textile seats similar to cut-down Model 3 variants.

The affordable Model Y is reportedly a shortened version with a smaller wheelbase, fitting into a planned 3-tier product lineup (short/standard/long), similar to strategies seen in other industries like smartphones. This allows Tesla to maximize existing production lines while targeting different market segments.

While Tesla still plans new battery and drivetrain technologies for 2026-2027, the current affordable model approach is a pragmatic step to rapidly expand market reach given economic conditions and changing incentives. Elon Musk, Tesla's CEO, emphasized that affordability is key because many potential buyers want Teslas but cannot afford them at current prices.

The production of the cheaper electric cars will be limited by the use of existing production lines and the number of different form factors that can be produced. However, executives have stated that no major hurdles remain, and the affordable electric cars will be purchasable in the next months.

This approach balances cost, production speed, and consumer demand to expand Tesla’s EV accessibility, making the core benefits of electric driving more accessible by lowering the price barrier rather than introducing a completely new platform or next-generation model immediately.
