Rising Vegetable Prices Temporarily Affect Kazakhstan's Market

In the past week, Kazakhstan has witnessed a surge in the prices of socially significant food items, particularly vegetables, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. The index of prices for these products increased by 0.2% between April 1 and 8, as reported by our site and confirmed by the Ministry of Trade and Integration of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Particularly noteworthy are the increases in cabbage (6.8%), carrots and onions (2.7% each), and potatoes (1.6%). Other commodities that have seen slight price hikes include sugar (0.7%), sunflower oil, beef (both 0.2%), and chicken (0.1%).

However, some products have decreased in price slightly during the same period, such as milk (-0.5%), flour and kefir (-0.4% each), rice, buckwheat groats, and eggs (-0.3% each), as well as butter and macaroni (-0.2% each).

The increase in vegetable prices has been attributed to seasonal factors, as the department noted. To combat this issue and ensure the continuity of food supplies, Kazakhstan has resorted to importing vegetables. Approximately 15,000 tons of potatoes have already been imported from China and Pakistan, and 3,000 tons of cabbage from Uzbekistan.

The early cabbage from the Turkestan region, along with other fresh vegetables from southern regions of Kazakhstan and neighboring countries, is expected to be supplied to the regions commencing from April 20. These measures should help alleviate potential shortages and provide a consistent supply of socially significant vegetables.

Additionally, the Trade Committee has been monitoring compliance with trade markup norms more strictly. During the first quarter of 2025, 1,332 violations of trade legislation were identified - a tremendous increase of 2.4 times compared to the same period the previous year. The role of these violations in the current price increases remains unclear.

Despite the temporary surge in vegetable prices affecting Kazakhstan's market, an increase in food-and-drink items extends beyond vegetables with sugar, sunflower oil, beef, chicken, and other commodities also experiencing price hikes. To maintain a consistent supply of vegetables and counteract potential shortages, the country has imported approximately 15,000 tons of potatoes and 3,000 tons of cabbage from China, Pakistan, and Uzbekistan, signifying a shift in Kazakhstan's lifestyle and finance necessities.
