SMA's New EV Charger Promises Faster, Flexible Charging in 2024

SMA Solar Technology AG, a German company with four decades of experience, is set to revolutionize electric vehicle charging with its new charger, scheduled for launch in 2024. The company, known for promoting sustainable mobility with over 50% of electric vehicle charging coming from solar energy via its solutions, aims to address key challenges in the German eMobility sector with this innovative product.

The new EV charger from SMA is designed for flexible use, featuring a Type 2 socket compatible with all common electric vehicles. It operates at maximum available power, enabling a charging process up to ten times faster than conventional household outlets. The charger can handle powers ranging from 1.4 to 22 kilowatts, making it suitable for both home and commercial environments.

With a completely new design, the charger excels in connectivity and system integration. It is a successor to SMA's current 22-kilowatt equipment and, when integrated into the SMA Energy System, offers users a range of solutions from a single source. SMA's Commercial eMobility Solution allows businesses to enjoy cost-effective and environmentally friendly eMobility, enabling the agile configuration of a commercial charging infrastructure.

SMA acknowledges key challenges in the German eMobility sector, including limited battery lifespan, insufficient range, gaps in charging news infrastructure, and the need for better integration of decentralized energy producers to ensure grid stability and support for renewable energy. The new EV charger is poised to address these issues and drive the growth of sustainable eMobility.
