Six Indian films dominate Netflix's global list of most-watched non-English films
Jigra
Vasan Bala (of "Monica O My Darling!") directed the film "Jigra," which premiered in theaters on October 11th and became available on Netflix on December 6th. In this past week alone, it has garnered 3.8 million views and 9.7 million watch-hours on Netflix. "Jigra" features Manoj Pahwa, Vedang Raina ("Archies"), and Vivek Gomber in prominent roles alongside Alia Bhatt.
In its debut week, the film found itself at the seventh position on Netflix's global list of most-watched non-English films ending on December 8th. It moved up the list, ranking third for the week ending December 15th.
Debashish Irengbam co-wrote the film with Director Bala, and they describe the story of an extremely protective sister Satya (Bhatt) who saves her younger brother (Raina) from significant danger in a foreign country. In the film, Bhatt portrays the female version of the typical angry young man from 70s Hindi movies, leaving no stone unturned and no rule unbroken in her mission to save the young one.
Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video
Directed by Raaj Shaandilyaa, "Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video" reached the fourth place on Netflix's global list in its debut week on the platform. It registered 7.8 million watch-hours on Netflix. It made its theatrical debut in October and had a satisfactory box office run.
"Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video" stars Rajkummar Rao, Tripti Dimrii, Mallika Sherawat, and Vijay Raaz in leading roles. The film delves into various aspects of lower middle-class life in small towns across the Hindi heartlands of India. Using comedy and romance as a cover, the film also presents social commentary.
Thangalaan
Pa Ranjith's Tamil action film, "Thangalaan," released in theaters on August 15th and performed poorly at the box office. In its debut week, the film registered 1.5 million views and 3.7 million watch-hours, landing it as the eighth most-watched non-English film on Netflix. Neeraj Pandey collaborated with Jimmy Shergill in the Netflix India original "Sikandar Ka Muqaddar." The film premiered online on November 29th and has remained a constant presence on Netflix's global list of most-watched non-English films for the third week in a row. With 1.7 million views and 4.1 million watch-hours, "Sikandar Ka Muqaddar" ranked seventh as the most-watched non-English film on Netflix during the week ending December 15th.
