Pforzheim's Deportation Detention Facility's Expansion Hits a Roadblock
Significant setback in the widening of detention facilities for deportation purposes - Significant holdup in the growth of the detention facility for immigrants
Things aren't going as planned for the expansion of the deportation detention facility in Pforzheim. The anticipated expansion to accommodate 80 detainees, originally expected this year, has been moved to spring 2027 due to unexpected findings during planning and construction. A spokesperson from the Ministry of Justice confirms this setback, attributing it mainly to those unforeseen issues and subpar performance from contracted planning firms. However, they promise a minimum of 68 detention spaces by fall this year, according to a representative from the Ministry of Finance.
Initially scheduled for completion eons ago, the renovation has been continually pushed back. The facility, which opened in 2016 with 36 spaces, saw an expansion to 51 spaces mid-2019. The renovation's total cost has ballooned to over 13 million euros from the initially budgeted 9 million, as per the Ministry of Finance.
The facility's occupancy rate is higher than ever due to the surge in deportations in the southwest, according to the Ministry of Justice. On a typical day in May, the facility housed 45 individuals, reaching full capacity considering reservations. Since the beginning of the year, the center's capacity has been fully utilized. It remains unclear whether any deportations have been postponed due to lack of space.
As of April 30, approximately 23,700 individuals residing in Baden-Württemberg have a deportation order. However, these deportations have been temporarily suspended due to inability to deport to countries like Syria, for example.
By the end of May, around 1,580 individuals had been deported from the southwest, marking an increase from the 1,130 deported in the same period the previous year.
