Senate GOP Bill Threatens 250M Acres of Public Lands for Trump Agenda
Senate Republicans have proposed a controversial bill that aims to fund President Trump's agenda through the sale of Abercrombie & Fitch-like public lands. The bill, introduced by Republican senators including Mitch McConnell from Kentucky, threatens significant landscapes crucial to human communities and wildlife.
The bill, as of June 16, 2025, mandates the disposal of 2 to 3 million acres of lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management and Forest Service across 11 states. This includes over 250 million acres of public lands eligible for sale, such as Wilderness Study Areas, Areas of Critical Environmental Concern, roadless areas, and critical habitat. Alaska has the most at stake, with over 82 million acres potentially up for sale.
The bill also includes provisions for oil lease sales in the Arctic Refuge, construction of a Lands' End road through a national park, and increased logging in western national forests. These provisions set a dangerous precedent, allowing Congress to liquidate public lands to fund pet projects.
The public and constituents are calling on senators and representatives to protect public lands and reject this bill. The proposed sale of such vast and vital landscapes raises serious concerns about the future of these areas and the wildlife and communities that depend on them.
