Etihad Rail Passenger Network Set to Revolutionise UAE Travel
The UAE is set to unveil an advanced passenger rail service network, connecting 11 key cities and regions across the country. Dubbed the Etihad Rail passenger network, this ambitious project will extend from Al Sila in the western region of Abu Dhabi to Fujairah on the east coast, covering approximately 900km.
The network, a significant part of a national project, aims to strengthen national connectivity, significantly cut travel times, and support the country's shift towards sustainable transportation. Trains on the network are capable of reaching speeds up to 200kmph, providing efficient, environmentally friendly travel.
By 2030, the service is expected to transport 36 million passengers annually. This ambitious target highlights the potential of the network to transform the way people travel within the UAE.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai's Ruler, recently rode the Etihad Rail passenger train from Dubai to Fujairah, demonstrating the network's readiness for passenger service.
In Abu Dhabi, the proposed station is expected to be positioned along the pipeline corridor between Mussafah Industrial Area and Mohammed Bin Zayed City, specifically in the vicinity of Dalma Mall, close to the Mussafah bus station and adjacent to Phoenix Hospital. Additional station sites are under consideration, including a potential stop near Jumeirah Golf Estates metro station in Dubai.
Two of the upcoming station locations have been confirmed: one in Sakamkam, Fujairah, and another in Sharjah's University City. The launch of the passenger service on the Etihad Rail project is expected to take place next year, with the service set to commence in 2026.
The key cities connected by Etihad Rail include Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, Al Ain, Ruwais, Al Mirfa, Al Dhaid, Ghuweifat (bordering Saudi Arabia), and Sohar (Oman, via the Hafeet Rail project). This coast-to-coast connection offers significant reductions in travel times, such as Abu Dhabi to Dubai or Fujairah in under two hours.
The Etihad Rail network also offers seamless integration with metro and bus systems at major stations to facilitate last-mile connectivity and encourages sustainable transport options. The network's launch is a significant step towards realising the UAE's vision of a connected, sustainable, and efficient transportation system.
