Reutlingen: Major Infrastructure Project Causes Traffic Woes Until Late 2025
For over half a year, traffic on Reutlingen's Sondelfinger Straße has been stalled due to extensive construction work. The project is expected to continue until the end of 2025, with no foreseeable resolution for commuters and residents in the meantime.
The €4.2 million revitalization project, led by municipal companies FairNetz, Stadtentwässerung Reutlingen (SER), and the city administration, involves the renewal of a dilapidated and leaky canal system. According to Hossein Kafili, project manager for new road construction and civil engineering at the city of Reutlingen, this is a combined sewer system that catches rainwater and household wastewater.
With only cycling and pedestrian traffic possible on the affected section of the road, the lack of vehicular access is only compounded by another construction site further along towards Sondelfingen, contributing to traffic congestion. While detour signs are visible, a Sondelfingen resident asks for a timeline for the resolution of the issue.
Meanwhile, a separate construction project will begin on Föhrstraße in January 2026. The city administration promises that while the entire road width will be closed, access to businesses will be maintained. Temporary access roads will be constructed to ensure uninterrupted commerce, with access to stores like Rewe, Netto, dm, and Easy Pharmacy maintained during construction. Similarly, Aldi and Burger King will remain accessible from the other side of Föhrstraße, and the Roller furniture store will be reachable via Mittnachtstraße.
Due to the nature of the construction work, involving the replacement of old, leaking pipes beneath the road's surface, the Sondelfinger Straße will remain closed until the end of 2025. The new steel-reinforced concrete pipes with a diameter of one meter will replace the existing 60-centimeter concrete pipes, stopping the persistent seepage of water into the ground. Construction on Fohrstraße is expected to take another year, adding to the 24 months of construction in this part of Reutlingen.
