The Hamburg-Berlin railway line is currently undergoing a significant overhaul, which began on August 1, 2025, and is scheduled to continue until the end of April 2026 [1][2][3]. During this period, the line will be completely closed to passenger and freight traffic, with approximately 130 construction sites along the 249-kilometre route undertaking extensive work [2].

The overhaul involves the replacement of 165 kilometres of track, 228 switches, the reconstruction of 21 switches, and the extension of 47 kilometres of overhead lines [2]. DB InfraGO, the infrastructure operator, is assessing if the Nauen–Berlin section could reopen earlier, possibly February 2026, but full line reopening is planned for April 2026 [1].

The closure of the main line Hamburg <> Ludwigslust <> Wittenberge <> Berlin-Spandau affects regional and long-distance trains, including lines branching off (e.g., Neustadt (Dosse), Wittenberge) [1]. The line is a vital corridor, with about 470 trains daily (20% freight) and roughly 30,000 passengers daily, making the closure a significant impact on passenger flow and freight operations, including container shipments to the Port of Hamburg [2][3].

Cargo rail companies are operating on diversion routes with some delays [2]. Passengers can expect longer travel times; for example, diverted long-distance trains run via Stendal and Uelzen, increasing journey time by approximately 45 minutes and decreasing frequency to hourly instead of every 30 minutes [4].

A comprehensive replacement bus service is in place for local and regional travel using over 170 buses on 28 routes to cover areas served by the closed rail section [1][3][5]. Long-distance trains are rerouted on alternative rail corridors that bypass the closed line [1][2][3]. Replacement travel information and assistance are being provided by DB InfraGo and VBB, with communication channels open for passenger queries [1].

Project manager Julian Fassing reported no major issues so far. New switches and signal boxes have been installed as part of the overhaul. The maximum speed of trains on the overhauled Hamburg-Berlin railway line will still be 230 kilometres per hour. However, adaptation of track and overhead lines for higher speeds was not part of the overhaul [1]. Occasionally, unknown cables are discovered during the work.

Stability of bridges and curve radii were not reassessed as part of the overhaul. The ground along the construction site is regularly checked for unexploded ordnance, but none have been found so far [1][2][3]. Despite these challenges, the overhaul aims to significantly improve the reliability and infrastructure for future rail traffic. Passengers and freight users should plan for disruptions and consult replacement service information during this period.
