The Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club (ADAC) is advocating for the increased adoption of Super E10 fuel in Germany for environmental benefits and cost efficiency. ADAC President Christian Reinicke has expressed his belief that the government should promote the use of Super E10, given that vehicles manufactured from 2011 onwards can handle this fuel type without issues.

Currently, gas stations are obligated to offer E5, which contains a maximum of 5% biofuel. Reinicke argues that this obligation should be transferred to Super E10 as a first step. He also suggests further measures should be considered if the shift towards Super E10 does not yield sufficient results. Reinicke does not explicitly rule out the possibility of a ban, though he does not expressly mention it.

E10 is often six cents cheaper than E5 and has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Last year, E5 accounted for 67.5% of domestic gasoline deliveries, with E10 at 27.4%, while Super Plus accounted for just over 5.1%. The shift towards E10 has been slow, as it was only at 13.9% in 2020.

Reinicke points to countries like Austria as examples, where there is no longer an obligation to offer E5, and no problems have been reported. Gas station operators and the Federal Association of Independent Tank Station Operators agree with the ADAC's stance, advocating for market economy in fuel sales and more flexibility to introduce climate-friendly fuels like HVO.

The shift towards Super E10 could lead to a significant shift in fuel sales, increased competition among fuel stations, and financial savings for consumers. It also aligns with broader sustainability goals, potentially contributing to a cleaner environment and reduced carbon footprint.
