Re-tendering Kiel-Hamburg Railway Line: Bahnnetz Mitte announced

Hey there! Let's chat about the latest changes in the railways of Schleswig-Holstein, shall we?

The Bahnnetz Mitte, transforming itself anew, has set its sights on the Kiel-Hamburg railway connection. This revitalized endeavor encompasses the RE 70 (Hamburg-Kiel) and the RE 7 (Hamburg - Kiel/Flensburg/Tinglev) lines, as announced by the Nahverkehrsbund Schleswig-Holstein (Nah.SH). Approximately five million train kilometers are traveled on these lines annually, with the current operations handled by DB Regio.

In the first round, regrettably, no economically feasible bids emerged for the Netz Mitte. A railway company will be selected to operate the lines starting from December 2027, for a minimum of 12 years.

However, for the parallel tendered Netz Süd-West with the Hamburg - Itzehoe/Heide (RB 61) and Hamburg - Wrist/Kellinghusen (RB 71) lines, there was a viable economic offer. As preferred by the Economics and Finance Committee, nordbahn has been chosen to continue its operations there. Yet, the award cannot be made immediately due to a railway company's invocation of the procurement chamber. Around 2.1 million train kilometers are covered on these lines annually.

With the re-tendering of the Netz Mitte, an intriguing possibility surfaces, according to the Nahverkehrsverbund – a transport company might be granted the contract to manage both networks.

By the way, did you know that the Kiel-Hamburg line is involved in broader infrastructure developments? The Lübeck–Hamburg railway is getting an upgrade, aiming to reach speeds of 200 km/h, as part of the Fehmarn Belt Tunnel project[2].

Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting revitalization of Schleswig-Holstein's railway infrastructure!

In the engaging re-tendering process of the Kiel-Hamburg railway line, the possibility of a single transport company providing both community aid through vocational training programs and managing the operations of the Netz Mitte and Netz Süd-West has emerged. The successful integration of this transport company could potentially revolutionize the industry's finance and transportation sectors, leading to a more efficient and sustainable rail network in Schleswig-Holstein.
