In a series of disturbing events, at least three deliberate arson attacks have targeted German railway lines, causing significant disruptions to both passenger and freight train services. The incidents began on July 31 and August 1, 2025, with two cable fires set deliberately on the heavily trafficked Düsseldorf-Duisburg corridor, one of Germany’s busiest rail routes.

The North Rhine-Westphalian Minister of Transport, Oliver Krischer (Greens), condemned the "enormous damage" and announced a thorough investigation into the incidents. A third fire occurred near Hohenmölsen in Saxony-Anhalt on a freight line used for coal transport.

The arson attacks are believed to have been set on fire on Thursday. Unknown persons placed an ignition device in a cable tunnel, causing the fires. The fires destroyed cables for the control of switches and signals, leading to significant disruptions in long-distance and regional traffic.

A far-left anarchist/extremist group called the "Angry Birds Kommando" claimed responsibility for the attacks, stating they were protests against environmental destruction and the global industrial system. Police are investigating these acts as part of a coordinated series of attacks, with state security involvement.

Deutsche Bahn and authorities have taken emergency measures to manage the disruptions. This includes setting up shuttle buses, rerouting trains via alternate paths, and temporarily halting construction work on parallel freight routes.

The attack on the railway line from Duisburg to Düsseldorf is particularly concerning. This line is one of the most heavily used railway connections in Germany, with over 620 trains daily - not including freight trains.

The authenticity of the statement by the "Angry Birds Kommando" is still being checked by the police. The state protection is also investigating the arson attack on the railway line. Alleged left-wing extremists are said to be responsible for the attack, according to Interior Minister Herbert Reul.

These recent events highlight rising concerns about politically motivated sabotage impacting critical transport infrastructure in Germany. The incidents are being treated as criminal acts of sabotage, and investigations are ongoing to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.

The arson attacks on German railway lines, a critical component of the country's transportation industry, have raised concerns about politically motivated sabotage, particularly in the context of general news regarding crime and justice. Financial implications for Deutsche Bahn and other stakeholders, including the freight industry, might increase due to these disruptions. Simultaneously, the sports industry could face challenges in terms of travel arrangements and schedules, given the importance of railway services for teams and spectators. Reports of the "Angry Birds Kommando" claiming responsibility for these attacks, allegedly due to protests against environmental destruction and the global industrial system, highlight the complex intersection between finance, transportation, and society's broader issues.
