Putin Praises Modi, Vows to Boost Indian Trade Ahead of December Visit
Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to visit India in early December, a trip that comes amidst a backdrop of strong relations between the two nations, with Putin lauding India's leadership and trade decisions.
Putin praised Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as 'balanced, wise, and nationally oriented', commending his decision to continue Russian oil imports despite US pressure. The Russian leader acknowledged the trade imbalance, with India heavily importing crude, and plans to address this by increasing purchases of Indian agricultural products and medicines. He welcomed the idea of a joint fund for AI and other cutting-edge technology development, proposed by Dr Arvind Gupta. Putin also recalled the 15th anniversary of the special strategic privileged partnership between Russia and India, highlighting their close political coordination.
Putin identified financing, logistics, and payment bottlenecks as key concerns in fully unlocking economic cooperation opportunities with India. The Russian government aims to purchase agricultural products such as coffee, tea, cocoa, and spices, as well as fruits and nuts from India, to reduce its trade surplus. These product categories have shown increased imports in related trade contexts.
Putin's upcoming visit to India signals the continued strengthening of bilateral relations. With plans to address trade imbalances and explore joint technological ventures, both nations look forward to further enhancing their strategic partnership.
