In North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), the first round of collective bargaining negotiations for approximately 2.5 million public sector employees across Germany commenced today in Potsdam. This significant event involves employees in various sectors, including cultural institutions, municipal hospitals, savings banks, airports, suppliers, disposal companies, municipal utilities, municipal daycare centers, road construction, and public swimming pools.

The negotiations are being conducted by Ver.di, a powerful German trade union, with several other unions such as GdP, GEW, IG BAU, dbb beamtenbund, and tarifunion. The key demands of Ver.di during these negotiations for public sector employees in NRW include a pay increase of 4.5 percent plus an additional 45 euros per month for approximately 280,000 employees[1].

This demand reflects Ver.di's aim to improve wages for public sector workers in this German state, aligning with broader efforts to negotiate better compensation in the service sector.

Beyond the pay increase, Ver.di is also advocating for higher allowances for particularly demanding activities. Moreover, the union is calling for an increase in training allowances and internship salaries by 200 euros per month.
