The North Sea island of Juist will continue to be a haven for tranquility and horse-drawn carriages, as a recent citizen vote has confirmed the island will remain car-free in the future.

In a decisive move, the majority of citizens voted against allowing vehicles for passenger transport, rejecting a proposed motorized train project. This means the planned train connection has not been implemented.

Currently, transportation to Juist remains reliant on traditional methods. Ferry services from Norddeich and air connections, recently revived with a new airline operator and changed logistics for better access between the island airport and town, continue to be the main modes of transport[3][4].

The decision, announced by the tourism administration after a vote on Sunday, is valid for two years. Apart from bicycles, handcarts, emergency vehicles, and vehicles for island protection, no other vehicles are allowed on Juist.

The island, known as the "horse island", will continue to secure freight traffic by contract for ten years. The future of Juist's transportation system will now need a new plan to connect its airport, which is about four kilometers from the city center. The previous plan involving a narrow-gauge railway, or "train", has been abandoned.

This vote comes after concerns from citizens that the introduction of a motorized train might lead to the introduction of other motorized vehicles, such as in waste collection, which is currently handled by horse-drawn carriages.

Juist, a North Sea island, has been a popular destination for tourists seeking a peaceful retreat. With this decision, it will continue to maintain its unique charm and character, free from the noise and pollution of motorized vehicles.

  1. In light of the recent community policy decision, the future of vocational training on Juist may need to adapt, as the reliance on traditional modes of transportation like horse-drawn carriages and ferries will likely persist.
  2. As the island's recent finance budget indicates, allocations for vocational training in industries such as transportation and engineering may see a shift, as the focus on alternative, eco-friendly transportation systems becomes increasingly important.
  3. In the realm of politics, the community's stance against motorized passenger transport demonstrates a strong commitment to maintaining Juist's unique character and reducing general-news-related issues like noise and pollution.
