Oberviechtach's History and Charms
The little town square in Oberviechtach boasts a rich past. A notable house, once housing the stationery store Blenz, has found new owners following its closure last year.

The town hall, crafted by local master builder, Anton Lenz, in 1896, started as a school building. Later, it served as the town hall before becoming the town archive's new home. The grand clock tower was added in 1906, while the town's coat of arms, engraved on the clock face, pays tribute to the town's long-held independence and resilience.
However, the town hall isn't exactly in mint condition. Like other buildings in town, it could use a well-deserved facelift. The town authorities are busy devising improvements for the town hall and various structures across the town.

The town's coat of arms proudly features a courageous lion brandishing a sword, symbolizing the town's enduring independence and freedom. The fierce lion also acknowledges the town's name, Oberviechtach, meaning "upper lion's den" in English. The coat of arms has been a point of pride for the town since 1912, when Oberviechtach was officially declared a municipality.
Oberviechtach's roots trace back to the Middle Ages. Documented in 1350, the town held its status as an independent city until 1803 when it joined the Kingdom of Bavaria.
