Increased Motorway Traffic Congestion During Saxony's Holidays - Prolonged delays on Saxony's highways during vacation periods
In the summer of 2025, vacationers and travelers in Saxony faced longer traffic jams on the highways compared to the previous year, despite stricter border controls. The ADAC Saxony traffic report, however, did not specify the exact cause of the increased congestion or any particular highways affected more than others.
According to the report, motorists spent approximately 400 more hours stuck in traffic during the six weeks of summer vacation. Interestingly, the number of traffic jams remained roughly the same as the previous year. The stricter border controls at Saxony's external borders, particularly on the A4 and A17 highways, had minimal or no worsening effect and even reduced jams on the A4 border crossing.
The increased traffic congestion was primarily due to the high volume of travelers during the vacation period, with key congestion routes like the A4 near Nossen and Dresden. Bottlenecks such as the Königshainer Berge tunnel, where single-lane road layouts cause delays, contributed to the congestion. Although no major construction sites were present, smaller daily roadworks added to the traffic stress.
The report did not reveal any particular days with exceptionally high traffic congestion during the six vacation weeks. It also did not provide any data on the number of vehicles involved in the increased traffic congestion. However, it did indicate a decrease in travel time lost for travelers at the border crossing on the A4 in July compared to the previous year.
The traffic management advice pointed to avoiding peak travel times on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays to reduce delays. The city where the border crossing on the A4 is located was not specified in the report.
In summary, the longer traffic jams were mainly caused by increased holiday traffic, not border controls. Stricter border controls had minimal or no worsening effect and even reduced jams on the A4 border crossing. Bottlenecks on key highway sections and ongoing smaller roadworks contributed to the congestion. Traffic management advice suggested avoiding peak travel times on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays to reduce delays.
