Prices for fuel continue to climb for the second consecutive week amid a summer-long trend of decreases, contrary to expectations.
In the current economic climate, the cost of fuel is a topic of great interest to many. Here's a breakdown of the recent trends and current situation regarding gasoline and diesel prices in Spain.
As of now, filling a medium-sized tank of gasoline (55 liters) would cost around 81.51 euros. This price is lower than the eurozone average of 1.678 euros per liter, with the price of unleaded gasoline 95 in Spain standing at 1.482 euros per liter, following a 0.13% increase.
On the other hand, diesel remains below the price of gasoline, with a current average price of 1.41 euros per liter—a 0.07% increase. Filling a medium-sized 55-liter tank of diesel costs around 77.55 euros. It's important to note that diesel has been below the price of gasoline for 133 weeks, and despite recent increases, it has decreased by 2.28% so far in 2025 compared to the end of the previous year.
The evolution of crude oil quotation is not directly transferred to the prices of fuels, but rather with a time lag. This lag, coupled with various other factors, contributes to the fluctuation in fuel prices. The prices of fuels in Spain depend on factors such as their specific quotation, taxes, cost of raw materials and logistics, and gross margins.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine, which occurred in 2022, caused diesel to be more expensive than gasoline from August 2022 until mid-February 2023. During this period, the peak price of diesel reached 2.1 euros per liter, while gasoline peaked at 2.141 euros per liter.
Interestingly, despite these increases, the average cost of a liter of gasoline remains below the price it had before the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Similarly, the average cost of a liter of diesel remains below the level it was before the start of the invasion.
It's also worth mentioning that Spain applies an excise tax of approximately 0.400 euros per liter on gasoline and 0.309 euros per liter on diesel fuel. This tax contributes to the overall cost of fuel in the country.
In comparison to the EU average, both the price of diesel and gasoline in Spain are lower. The price of diesel in Spain is below the EU average of 1.536 euros per liter, and the price of unleaded gasoline 95 in Spain is below the EU average of 1.628 euros per liter.
Despite recent increases, gasoline prices have decreased by 2.8% so far in 2025 compared to the end of the previous year. This decrease, combined with the lower prices compared to the EU average, offers some relief to consumers in Spain.
In conclusion, while fuel prices in Spain have seen fluctuations in recent times, they are currently lower than the EU average for both gasoline and diesel. However, it's crucial to keep an eye on these trends as they continue to evolve.
