Portuguese Gas Utility Dourogás Secures Green Hydrogen Supply from Fusion Fuel through Pact
Fusion Fuel Signs Green Hydrogen Deal with Dourogás
Fusion Fuel, a leading green hydrogen company, has inked a significant offtake agreement with Portuguese natural gas utility Dourogás. This collaboration is a crucial first step towards establishing a European hydrogen economy and aligns with Dourogás' pledge to support Portugal's decarbonization targets.
Fusion Fuel, listed on NASDAQ under HTOO, has developed a modular, integrated solar-to-hydrogen generator. The company's business segments include the sale of electrolyzer technology, development of turnkey hydrogen plants, and the sale of green hydrogen as a commodity.
Dourogás, the leading gas company in Portugal's NGV mobility sector, will use the hydrogen produced by Fusion Fuel in its domestic, industrial, and mobility sectors, where it holds a dominant market position. The company has also been investing heavily in R&D and production of renewable gases, including biomethane and green hydrogen.
The first hydrogen to be blended will come from Fusion Fuel's GreenGas project in Évora, expected to commence operations in 2023. Portugal's largest gas distribution network, FLOEne, will build the infrastructure to enable blending in the grid as part of its energy transition commitment.
This agreement marks the first connection into Portugal's national gas grid for Fusion Fuel's projects. Portugal's national hydrogen strategy, adopted in 2020, aims for a 15% blend of hydrogen in its natural gas distribution network and 2 GW of electrolyzer capacity by 2030.
Nuno Moreira, CEO of Dourogás Group, hailed the partnership as ideal for energy innovation and sustainability. Pedro Caçorino Dias, Fusion Fuel's Head of Portugal, considers the agreement a critical milestone in the development of the green hydrogen economy in Portugal.
The Dourogás Group, founded in 1994 and rooted in Vila Real, Portugal, is committed to providing clean energy to and within Portugal. The group's recent win of the Green Energy Award underscores its investment in renewable energy.
Portugal's largest chemical company, Bondalti Chemicals, which operates a state-of-the-art chlor-alkali plant equipped with Asahi Kasei's electrolyzer systems, is also involved in developing hydrogen infrastructure in Portugal. However, there's no available information suggesting that Fusion Fuel has signed a contract with any of these companies in Portugal to supply green hydrogen from their projects.
This partnership between Fusion Fuel and Dourogás is a significant step towards Portugal achieving the goals set by the National Plan Energy and Climate 2021-2030. The country is striving for a sustainable future, and this agreement is a testament to that commitment.
