Portugal Sets New Record With 103.6% Renewable Energy Production
Portugal has set a new record for renewable energy production. In March, the country generated 103.6% of its electricity from clean sources, surpassing the previous record set in 2014. This remarkable achievement has been praised by Green MEP Claude Turmes, who sees it as a testament to the potential of renewable energy in the EU.
Portugal's renewable energy output reached an impressive 4,812GWh in March, exceeding its total electricity needs for the month by 165GWh. This is the first time in the 21st century that renewables have topped 100% of Portugal's production. On 11 March, the country generated 143% of its power from renewable sources. However, Portugal's isolation from the rest of Europe's energy grid poses a challenge. Without adequate storage or robust interconnections, excess energy could go to waste. To overcome this, Portugal is exploring third-party interconnectors, such as a cable to Morocco.
Portugal's success in renewable energy is part of a broader trend in Europe. Countries like Germany and Austria have also significantly increased their renewable energy capacities. Austria has nearly doubled the EU average for renewable energy share, while Germany's renewable electricity share reached about 45% by 2023. These efforts, alongside Portugal's achievement, demonstrate the continent's commitment to clean energy.
Portugal's record-breaking renewable energy production in March will result in 1.8 million fewer tonnes of CO2 emissions and savings of over €20 million. The increase in renewable generation also led to a decrease in average energy prices, from €43.94 per MWh in March 2022 to €39.75 per MWh in March 2023. Despite challenges posed by its isolation, Portugal's success in renewable energy production serves as an inspiration for the rest of Europe.
