While consumer sentiment reels back, we're breaking down what's making it hit the skids. According to a University of Michigan study, the Index of Consumer Sentiment took a dive to 50.8 in May 2025, marking the second-lowest rating ever recorded since the survey began in 1952. Moreover, sentiment has plummeted nearly 30% since January 2025.

Note: Consumer sentiment reflects citizens' assessments of their personal finances and economic outlook.

Why the decline? You guessed it - tariffs and trade policy uncertainty continue to top consumers' minds! Almost 75% of respondents mentioned tariffs spontaneously, up from almost 60% in April. Additionally, inflation expectations are skyrocketing, with one-year inflation expectations climbing to 7.3%.

Joanne Hsu, the Director of Surveys of Consumers, shared an insightful comment on the state of consumer sentiment:

"Slight improvements in sentiment this month for independents were offset by a 7% decline among Republicans."
