Munich's U5 Extension: Breaking Ground on Three New Subway Stations

Scoop: The Bavarian city's U5 line is set to expand, with the initial plans for the new subway stations unveiled in District Committee Laim. The first station, "Baumschule Laim," is slated for Willibaldstraße.

Exciting New Stops: The "Baumschule Laim" and Beyond

The district committee was thrilled with the designs, particularly those created by architecture firm Allmann Wappner. The U5 extension should be completed by 2028, and the trains are supposed to start rolling in mid-2031. The extension from Laimer Platz to Pasing was already approved in 2019, marking the first step towards expanding the U5 line to the Freiham development area.

U5 Extension: The New Route Revealed

Construction on the 3.8-kilometer-long first section to Pasing has already commenced. At Gotthardstraße, west of Laimer Platz, excavators have already begun digging to build the new tunnel, which will lead to the future station site at Willibaldstraße.

Each station has its own unique layout. "Baumschule Laim" will have a platform about 12 meters below the surface, measuring 120 meters long and 7.80 meters wide, with entrances at the intersections of Gotthard-/Reutterstraße and Willibaldstraße. Elevators will ensure barrier-free access for all passengers.

U5 Extension: More Stations on the Way

After passing under the allotment and sports facility near the Westbad, the U5 extension will make its way under Am Knie, with plans for a second station there. The "Am Knie" station will feature a platform approximately 13 meters below the surface, measuring 120 meters long and 7.40 meters wide with entrances at the intersections of Josef-Felder-Straße/Landsberger Straße/Am Knie and the southern end of the platform leading to the surface at the street Am Knie. Several elevators will ensure accessibility for all passengers.

U5 Extension: Full Speed Ahead with a Price Tag

Subsequently, the tube will cross under Landsberger Street before terminating in Pasing. The city is building a new station there, which will provide convenient S-Bahn transfers. Completion is expected by 2030, with an estimated cost of 1.3 billion euros. Initial cost estimates were lower, but that could change. Stay tuned for updates!
