Renovation of Schoeneweide Station: A Comprehensive Overhaul for Southeastern Berlin

The historic Bahnhof Schoeneweide station, one of the most significant regional and long-distance transport barriers in southeastern Berlin, is set for a substantial renovation and modernization. According to Transport Senator Claudia Leistner (Die Gruenen), the planning process for this project is expected to commence this year.

The coordination of the changes to the forecourt of Schoeneweide station is currently managed by the Berlin Senate Department for Urban Development and Housing. The renovation includes constructing a new tunnel for pedestrians, building a separate tunnel for trams, renewing both platforms, creating barrier-free access, installing new roofs, and seating areas.

The Treptow-Koepnick district office is collaborating closely with Deutsche Bahn on the redesign of the northern forecourt of Bahnhof Schoeneweide. This area has been closed for years, marred by graffiti, and filled with rubbish. The district aims to transform the station surroundings into a more passenger-friendly, comfortable, and barrier-free space.

The station was one of the three most crucial long-distance train stations in East Berlin before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Significant renovation and modernization needs have accumulated at the historic station since the 1970s. Throughout the following century, the station has undergone renovation and modernization.

Comprehensive renovation of the station has been underway since 2013 as part of the Goerlitzer Bahn modernization. Construction began in March 2013, with a total of 45 million euros being invested in the renovation. Infravelo, a state-owned company responsible for numerous cycling projects in Berlin, is conducting a feasibility study for a bicycle parking facility on the station grounds.

After Deutsche Bahn and the district office agree on the framework conditions for the renovation, a landscape and traffic infrastructure concept will be commissioned. The project includes the question of financing the redesign, but no concrete timeline for the project has been set yet.

The renovated station will serve as a hub for various mobility options, making it a significant transportation node. The public will be involved in the planning process early on to ensure the needs of the community are met. The renovation was initially scheduled to be completed by 2018, but the current completion date is now expected to be at the end of 2022.

The station's history is not forgotten in this renovation. Trains first stopped at the station in 1868, making it a key part of Berlin's transport network for over 150 years. The renovation is set to preserve the station's historic charm while bringing it into the 21st century.

As the renovation progresses, the Schoeneweide station is poised to regain its importance as a major transportation hub in Berlin, providing a comfortable, barrier-free, and modern experience for passengers.
