Job Cuts Galore in Baden-Württemberg's Metal and Electronics Sector Amid Economic Woes
Ongoing redundancies in the metal and tech sectors persist - Persistent layoffs persist in the metal and electric sector
Here's the skinny on the ongoing economic crisis that's been giving the metal and electronics industry in Baden-Württemberg a real headache since 2019. When the dust settled by April last year, around 14,000 jobs had vanished, according to Oliver Barta, CEO of Südwestmetall in Stuttgart. That's a significant piece of the puzzle, considering the sector was employing nearly 957,300 folks at the time.
After a brief blip in March, production took a nosedive in April, despite an improved order situation. Barta's not sugarcoating it: "We're still a long way from seeing a trend reversal or even a stable recovery," he admitted. The sector's been wrestling with location factors, transformation woes, and geopolitical risks causing unease.
In March, there was a temporary boost due to announced US tariffs and extra working days thanks to a late Easter holiday. But then, in April, things took a turn for the worse, with production dropping by a whopping 4.5 percent compared to the previous year. Despite a 8.5 percent year-on-year increase in orders, companies haven't been able to capitalize on it.
Job Losses Continue in 2024
The industry's struggles have ignited a debate about Germany's future. Critics warn of deindustrialization, and the southwest is feeling the heat. For instance, the auto industry's battling weak economic conditions and lower demand, particularly for electric cars. The machine-building sector's been facing a prolonged drought when it comes to orders.
The Statistical Office of the State reported that the number of employees in the entire Baden-Württemberg industrial sector decreased for the first time in two years of growth in 2024 by 0.8 percent to about 1.3 million. The machine-building sector, the automotive industry, and metal production took the brunt of the job cuts, losing 4,800, 3,200, and 3,900 employees, respectively.
