OTS Summit to Boost Azerbaijan-Türkiye Trade Via Zangezur Corridor

The 12th Summit of the Council of Heads of State of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) is set to take place in Gabala, northern Azerbaijan. The event will centre around regional peace and security, with a particular focus on the Zangezur Corridor's potential to boost trade and connectivity between Azerbaijan and Turkey.

The Zangezur Corridor, a key topic at the summit, is expected to reduce logistics costs, expand trade, and serve as a vital infrastructure link for electricity and digital communications between the two nations. Looking back, between 2020 and 2024, Turkey's trade with OTS member countries totalled an impressive $62.6 billion. During this period, Azerbaijan emerged as Turkey's top trading partner within the bloc, with $12.8 billion in Turkish exports and $5.3 billion in imports. Notably, Turkey has become Azerbaijan's largest electricity buyer, demonstrating strong energy cooperation.

Turkish contractors have played a significant role in construction projects in Azerbaijan. Meanwhile, Kazakhstan remains Turkey's main Central Asian trade partner, with Ankara ranking among its top five investors. Trade with Kyrgyzstan in 2020-24 amounted to $5.4 billion, while trade with Uzbekistan reached $15.8 billion. The current observer members of the OTS are Hungary, Azerbaijan, and Uzbekistan.

The upcoming summit in Gabala is expected to strengthen ties and foster further cooperation among OTS member states. With the Zangezur Corridor set to enhance connectivity, the stage is set for increased trade and infrastructure development between Azerbaijan and Turkey, and indeed, the wider OTS community.
