In a bold move to combat the growing issue of drug trafficking and addiction in Kazakhstan, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has taken a firm stance, emphasizing a strict state prohibition and control over drug production and sales.

At a recent meeting of the Security Council, President Tokayev outlined his integrated approach to countering narcotics and related crimes. He called for a flexible but firm policy, with a focus on supporting addicts and providing broader medical and rehabilitation coverage, while maintaining zero tolerance for drug traffickers.

The President stressed the importance of improved information and analytical work, including the collection of statistical data, tracking chemical flows, and monitoring suspicious financial transactions linked to drug crimes. He strongly condemned the romanticization of illegal drugs and alcohol, especially among young people, urging enhanced prevention efforts through education and media regulation.

In his address, President Tokayev also highlighted the need to increase the effectiveness of countering transnational organized crime related to drugs. He emphasized the importance of identifying, preventing, and punishing drug offenses, and of dismantling drug laboratories and outlets.

The President's chairing of the Security Council meeting was titled: "Flexible for drug addicts, harsh for drug business." He reiterated that the production and sale of any types of narcotics should be strictly prohibited and under severe state control.

In a significant step, the anti-narcotics headquarters in Kazakhstan has been elevated to government level, reflecting the President's commitment to combating this issue effectively.

President Tokayev issued specific instructions to the government, regional governors, and relevant state bodies to strengthen measures to prevent drug addiction and combat the drug business. However, the details of these instructions remain unclear at this time.

The President reminded that countering narcotics requires the active participation of society. He urged all Kazakhstan citizens to play their part in combating this issue, which threatens the well-being and future of the nation.
