In the heart of Uganda lies the Murchison Falls National Park, a protected area renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and rich biodiversity. However, this natural wonder is facing threats from oil activity, with the construction of the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) system encroaching upon its boundaries.

The environmental organization, World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), has analysed satellite images and reported that the pipeline system is advancing near the park and a critical wetland area. This development has sparked concerns among civil society, people who care about biodiversity, and those whose livelihoods depend on the resources of the Ramsar site.

Nabiruma, a frontline activist against the EACOP project, has been leading campaigns against the project for several years. Recently, Nabiruma has been vocal in her efforts to prevent the jailing of fellow critics. Despite these efforts, TotalEnergies, the company behind the project, has refused to reconsider drilling oil in the park and is proceeding with the project.

TotalEnergies has not responded to Mongabay's request for comment regarding the oil drilling in the park. However, community members and some tourism sector stakeholders have expressed their concerns about the potential impact on their livelihoods and the protection of nature.

The Murchison Falls, an image courtesy of Earth Insight, serves as a poignant reminder of the beauty that is at stake. As the fight against the EACOP project continues, activists like Nabiruma remain steadfast in their efforts to protect this precious ecosystem and the people who depend on it.

This article was published without a response from TotalEnergies regarding the oil drilling in the park. The future of the Murchison Falls National Park hangs in the balance, and the world watches as the struggle against oil activity continues.
